Sun is shining

Thank god for the humiliation challenge or my lazy butt wouldn’t have run a single mile this weekend. I ran on both Saturday and Sunday and reached my goal of four runs for the week. Here’s the breakdown:

Week 1 of the Humiliation Challenge
Tuesday – 5.3 miles (Pace: molasses uphill)
Wednesday – 4 miles (Pace: molasses on flat ground)
Saturday – 5 miles (Pace: molasses on slight decline)
Sunday – 3 miles (Pace: geriatric turtle)
Total – 17.3 miles

As you can see, I also reached my goal of a minimum of 17 miles for the week. I did consider running the extra 2.7 miles on Sunday for an even 20 miles, but decided against it for two reasons. One, I just wasn’t up for the extra distance on Sunday, and, two, it’s been a while since I’ve had a weekly mileage in the double digits and I didn’t want to push my luck.

Overall I’m pleased with my progress, but my sucktastic lack of speed has been a bit of a downer. Yes, all my runs have been done at an easy pace, but this easy pace has been a lot slower than my previous easy pace. That’s not good. For the moment I’m trying not to obsess, but it’s difficult because that’s what I do best. Speed is going to have to wait; for now I just need to get firmly back into the running groove again.

Besides running, I enjoyed my last weekend alone in the flat before the return of the housemates sometime this week. Yesterday I met friends at a local pub to watch The Boat Race on a big screen television and spent the rest of the day enjoying the sunshine, which has been significantly increased due to English daylight savings time which happened Saturday night. All in all, it was a good weekend.

Back to basics

In an effort to improve my energy levels and shed some pounds, I joined SparkPeople last week. I figure monitoring my caloric intake for a little while will help me get back on track. I’ve been feeling rather run down for a while now. I think a lot of it has to do with my poor nutrition as of late. Winter and crappy weather in general is not conducive to healthy eating. Now with the onslaught of spring, it’s time to get my old self back.

Thanks to the Huskers, my commitment to running has been renewed. All my runs in the past couple of weeks have been easy runs and that’s fine for right now. I don’t want to break this still fragile habit by putting excessive demands on it, but in time I will incorporate some speedwork back into my plan and get to work shaving my 5K.

So two runs down, two to go this weekend. If you don’t already know, X-C2 and I have joined forces in order to take down the cocky sandbagging b@stard that is the Razz. In the words of Cotton McKnight from Dodgeball, “Looks like it’s gonna be a two-on-one menage-a-trois of pain.” Er, or something like that.

Hassling the Huskers, Part 1

So far in the motivation-by-humiliation contest, I’m doing pretty well. I’ve logged two runs so far this week and have also attended spin and yoga classes at the gym. Tonight I’m set for another round on the spin bike and then in the studio for some strength training. Hell, I even attempted my first snot shot during this morning’s run and achieved some modest success.

Because unlike some people, I wouldn’t let something like a little tornado interfere with my running. You’re weak, the both of you.

The Shame Game

This weekend I spent my time doing anything but running. Part of it had to do with the fact that all my housemates are gone and I have the place to myself for the next week. The other part was sheer laziness. Well, only on the exercise front. I’ve been pretty productive otherwise. Besides an obligatory trip to the library, I cleaned the house, baked cupcakes, prepared my lunches for the next three days and went for a five mile walk. And since the sitting room hogs aren’t in house, I actually got to watch a couple of movies on our gigantic tv set. By the way, Gosford Park is excellent.

But no running. I’ve been pretty lacking in the motivation department when it comes to running lately. My next race is about seven weeks away which feels like ages and it’s only 7K. Having said that, it’s the one year anniversary of the first race I ever ran in and I definitely want my time to be good. So I need some encouragement to stop slacking and get back to training.

So I turned to Razz. Yeah, surprised me too. Razz has been complaining again of a lack of motivation. So we’re teaming up with X-Country2 to keep ourselves accountable. Razz and I just want to run four days a week, though I have a caveat of wanting to get in at least 17 miles each week. X-Country2, who’s training for the Lincoln marathon, wants to maintain her focus. So, for the next five weeks, the three of us are going to mock each other into pursuing our respective goals. There was talk of having an additional incentive, something like a prize for the ultimate non-procrastinator, but we were all stumped as to what that should be. If you all are more imaginative, feel free to leave suggestions in the comments.

Spring is here and I’m trying to hoist myself out of the rut winter has buried me in. Wednesday I attended my first strength training class in a loooooong time. I was expecting to feel like a pensioner mowed down by a bus on Thursday. But no, I felt fine. No muscle soreness anywhere. WTF?

Because my memory is complete shite, I forgot that the real soreness doesn’t set in until two days after. So today....I can barely move. Who knew there were actual muscles underneath my boobs. I know now because they hurt like a mo-fo. My abdominals and glutes are also in pain. It feels like I got gang-banged by the exercise equipment at the gym. Definitely not fun.

In England, this Sunday is Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday as they like to call it here. Ever since I moved here, I’ve sent my mom a card on both the UK and US holiday. Mostly it’s because if I don’t buy a card in March, I’ll have nothing to send to her in May, but also because I am the best damn daughter in the world.

And the most modest.

My mom gets a kick out of it because she has something fun to look forward to in her mail box other than bills and store flyers. Also, as an anglophile, she likes that the cards usually say ‘mum’ on them. This time around she’s also getting a bunch of fridge magnets from my recent trips to Wales and Bath. My sister and I have a longstanding tradition of purchasing magnets for her during our travels. Our mom’s not much into knick knacks, so magnets seemed to be the smallest and most useful souvenir we could get for her. Now one entire side of her fridge, top to bottom, is covered in magnets. We keep waiting for the day when the weight imbalance finally tips the whole damn thing right over. Fingers crossed these latest acquisitions do the trick.

So to all the moms who read this blog, happy UK mummy’s day to you. Eat a scone, wear a funny hat, let your teeth rot and scold your children in a posh English accent. You’ve definitely earned it.

And to my mother who reads this blog but never comments....Hi Mom! Miss you, love you and thanks again for taking care of my geriatric diabetic cat. I owe you a lot. For that and the fact that you couldn’t sit normally for a month after my birth. Thanks also for reminding me of that....every damn time we talk. ;)

Not-so-wordless Wednesday*

Hey folks. Not much to say today. I went to yoga last night and planned on running after, but when I got home and changed into my running shirt I felt a wave of nausea and dizziness. I parked myself in a chair hoping it would pass but it didn't. Feeling pretty tired, I decided to retire early for the night (9:30 pm--christ, how old am I?!). However, I woke up early this morning and got a quick three miler in, so at least whatever it was that laid me low last night didn't last.

As per Meg's request, here are some more photos of Bath. Vanilla, any of this seem familiar at all?

Race Report: Bath Half Marathon

I had a lovely weekend in Bath. Walked around a lot, took photos, relaxed. Sadly, my camera battery died on Saturday evening and I forgot to bring my charger, so no race day pics.

The proprietor of the B&B I was staying at was also running the half marathon along with her daughter. The three of us walked to the start line together and then hung out. The race started 30 minutes later than expected. We didn’t realize this until we were already packed into our starting corral, so by the time we did start I had to pee again. Junk.

The course was basically a double loop. The only truly scenic bit was the start/finish area. The rest was through suburban residential and commercial areas. Having said that, there was great crowd support the whole way, something I haven’t experienced in a race before. The race was touted as being flat. Eh, not so much. Half of it was. The other half consisted of annoying inclines, most of which I had to deal with twice because of the double loop situation. There were also no pace leaders for the race, so once again I was left to my own shoddy pacing.

The day was beautiful. Dare I say too beautiful. The sun was out in full force and there was nary a cloud in sight. I didn’t think to bring sunglasses with me because on Friday when I checked the forecast for race day it said cloudy. Oops. So, I pretty much burned the hell out of my eyes leaving me looking like I’d overindulged in the wacky weed for the rest of the day. Always classy, that’s me.

The race started out well. There were well over 10,000 people running, so I was engulfed in a large crowd the whole way. Unfortunately, I got shin splints in my left leg in the first mile and had to back off the pace for a while. Then, at mile 2 I burped up bile and came very close to vomiting on myself. Gross does not cover the taste I had in my mouth for the next couple of miles.

Thankfully the shin splints went away around mile 4, but it was replaced by intermittent arch pain for the remainder of the race. Truly annoying, but what did I expect with my half-assed training for this race.

Halfway through I realized how dehydrated I was when I noticed my lips were super dry and I wasn’t sweating anymore. I brushed my arms and salt would flake off, but there was no moisture. The sun was really doing a number on me, so I made sure to grab a bottle of whatever liquid was being passed out at every aid station from there on out and kept it with me until it was emptied.

And, as I am quite familiar with by now, I was passed by everyone and their mother. The race had a staggered start and I was in wave four out of six, so there were a few thousand people behind me who zoomed on by me at some point. They included, but were not limited to, people old enough to be my grandparents, a woman who was as round as she was tall, guys in drag & tutus, a guy in a cricket uniform and a cow. Real morale boosters, let me tell ya.

Being tired as hell, I’m pretty damn proud that when I saw the 11 mile marker, I pushed my dead legs for the remainder of the race. During almost all of my training runs I run the last mile plus at a faster pace and I was happy to see that I could do the same during a race. I even sprinted the last 200 meters. My time was a disappointing one and a half minutes slower than my previous HM. Eh, again, what did I expect with my lackluster training.

The goody bag was pretty good. I got a decent cotton race t-shirt, a medal, various drinks and snack bars. Also, there was a jar of cranberry sauce. Yeah, I don’t get it either.

I realize I’ve just whined like a little bitch, so let me take a moment to point out some things I’m really grateful for about the race.
  • I finished.
  • I’m now sporting a kickin’ farmer’s tan.
  • My bib number was 12345, which was also the combination to the air shield on planet Druidia in Spaceballs.
  • I laughed at myself when the ultimate musical trifecta played on my ipod—Gonna Make You Sweat, Move This, and Rhythm is a Dancer. Nic, I hope you’re proud of me. [Editor's note: Because I'm outside the US, YouTube will not let me access some of the original videos for these songs. A-holes.]
  • I did not require the assistance of the paramedics like so many other racers did. Seriously, it was actually quite scary how many fit runners were dropping like flies out there.
  • I did not lose control of my bowels.
  • I did not puke.
  • I wasn’t rained on.
  • I wasn’t freezing.
  • I was not passed by the guy in the rhino suit.
  • My compression legging things worked wonders. I just wish they had thigh-high versions as my quads are a bit sore today.
  • Did I mention that I finished?
So, how have I celebrated finishing my second half marathon? This morning I went for my annual exam at the doctor’s office. Nothing like spreading your legs and knowing you’re going to get absolutely no pleasure from it. It’s what I assume marriage must be like for most women. (Ba-dump bump ching!)

Actually, the whole experience is just super awkward no matter what the doctor does (i.e. not talk to me, talk to me about the procedure, talk to me about anything other than the procedure). Every single time, that stupid speculum is freaking freezing when they violate me with it. Jebus H, people, can’t you have a warming pad or something for that thing! Give a girl a break here.

Friday miscellany

Finally, finally, finally I got off my lazy arse and went for a run today. It felt good. I just wish I could manage my time better and not miss out on so many runs. Because of my lack of running these past couple of weeks, I know the half marathon on Sunday is not going to be as easy and fun as I’d hoped. Instead, I’m just hoping that I finish upright and not collapsed in a puddle of my own bodily fluids. That’s an attractive mental image though, no?

Somebody’s watching me
If you didn’t already know, I’m a total Sitemeter stalker. I like to know how you all get to my blog, mostly so I can keep tabs on who’s slagging me off in the blogosphere. But it’s also how I find the lurkers. One such lurker who’s finally come out of her shell and started up her own blog is Carpeviam (Latin for ‘seize the road’). At her blog, Copiaverborum (more Latin! meaning ‘a lot of words’), she’s chronicling her life and her training for the Boston marathon. Stop by and wish her luck, folks. Thankfully my friends took pity on me and didn’t dare me to do anything idiotic on Monday. However, I ended up doing something stupid all on my own. We went for lunch at the burrito joint nearby. All three of us slathered on the tabasco sauce, but I was the only one stupid enough to get a soda with my meal. I was burping up bubbles of fire through my nose for the rest of the afternoon. It was not a pleasant experience. They dubbed me the Dragon. Bastards.

Anyhoo, last night I hit the gym for spin class and yoga. I really need to rethink my Tuesday exercise regimen. Yoga was once again fantastic. Spin however was not. The later evening spin class is taught by this woman with a motor mouth and not too much going on in her noggin. I’m sure she’s a very nice person, but she sucks as a spin instructor. Sadly there’s too big of a time gap between the first evening spin class (with a different instructor) and yoga, so I’m just going to have to schedule a run on Tuesday mornings and attend yoga at night.

Speaking of running, I haven’t done any of that since my crampy run on Saturday. Boy this taper sure is relaxing. I’m so going to bonk during the half marathon on Sunday. At least after this I only have shorter distances races on the horizon.

What it feels like for a girl

Thanks to the horrors of Mother Nature, I was awakened at the ass-crack of dawn on Saturday by the most horrendous cramps I’ve had in years. Seriously, they woke me up out of a dead sleep and that is virtually unheard of for me. Well, except for when certain people who reside above me decide to get their freak on. I proceeded to spend the next two plus hours drifting in and out of painful consciousness until finally at 7:30 am I gave up and got out of bed.

It was a toss up whether to down a bottle of ibuprofen or go for a run. Way back in the day when I was a youngin and didn’t know any better, I was told that exercise helped alleviate the lady cramps. My half marathon experience proved that theory to be full of crap. However, I’m nothing if not stubborn and masochistic, so I thought I’d give it another go. Mostly because my Advil supply is dwindling and I’m too cheap to shell out for more right now.

So I suited up and headed out for a run. Originally I had planned on doing the 6 mile loop, but then said to hell with it and stopped just after 4 miles. I don’t know why I stopped. Running had actually made my cramps go away, but I was still in a foul mood (thank you, rampaging hormones) and I just didn’t feel like continuing. Yes, I realize the reasons for starting and ending my run are completely contrary, but that’s how I roll when riding the crimson wave.

Have I lost my male readership yet?

Today I’m getting by on no sleep and a whole lotta caffeine. I should be passed out in an exhausted heap on my desk right now, but instead I’m heading out to lunch soon with friends who are evil enough to take advantage of my compromised mental state by daring me to do stupid stuff. Which of course I will do without batting an eye. This day is not going to end well for me, I can just tell.

In honor of the fact that it appears I haven't bullied Razz into leaving Blogland, here's some bullety goodness for you.
  • I haven't run in five days.
  • I have a half marathon to run next weekend.
  • The former is not helping me look forward to the latter.
  • Term is over at the end of next week and it seems like I'm the only one not going somewhere fun over the break.
  • Instead I get to spend those six weeks catching up on badly overdue work.
  • I know I should stop complaining, but this is my blog so suck it.
  • I'm sorry I told you to suck it. Please don't leave Blogland because of that.
  • Yes I have a horrendous guilt complex. It's made worse with lack of sleep, poor nutrition and no running.
  • Again, not looking forward to that half marathon next weekend.

Having read Frayed Laces, tfh and others extolling the virtues of yoga, I’ve been wanting to give it a try. It’s been on my to-do list for ages now actually. Then I read that, of all people, even the sot had tried yoga. And I still hadn’t. I think I lost one of my chick cards that day.

Well, I quickly redeemed myself and my femininity by signing up and taking my first yoga class last night. It conveniently started right after my spin class ended, so I was already sweaty and exhausted when I entered the studio.

I surprised myself. I really liked it. I didn’t think I would. The instructor was fantastic—very into yoga and its benefits but not so new age-y I wanted to barf. She made sure to ask who the newbies in the class were and checked up on everyone regularly. She even passed by me at one point to ask how I was liking the class and to compliment me on my form. Not bad for this clumsy oaf.

I’ve already signed up for next week’s class and am debating whether or not to go to the one on Friday. It all depends on my schedule though.

Another day, another razzdoodle
I just want to take a minute and publicly badmouth RazZdoodle. Again. Thanks to you, sir, I’ve wasted a good portion of my life on Why did you have to post the link to this website?! I’ve been on the damn thing every day. Currently two quizzes have me in their snare: US Presidents and Emperors of Rome. I’ve finally been able to name all the presidents, but since I’m such a freak, I now have to list them in chronological order before I can it let go. Same goes for the Roman emperors. My progress so far has been frankly amazing since the first time I did that quiz I could only name 20 or so emperors and now I can name all 76. Crazy.

And like any person on a sinking ship, I'm making sure I don't drown alone. Now I've exposed more of you bloggers and about half my department to the wondrous evils of this website. Work output has decreased significantly this past week in my office. It makes me happy when I'm not the only slacker there.

Anyhoo, now it’s time to add another definition to the word ‘razzdoodle’.

1) writer’s block
2) prolific use of bullet points
3) premature ejaculation ... of a podcast and/or post
4) breaking a toilet
5) sabotaging another’s productivity with quiz-filled websites

I’ve officially been razzdoodled. Curse you, you Husker nutter!

Since I can’t inflict any direct pain on you from an ocean away, I can only hope you see Starbucks everywhere you go for the next thirty some-odd days to make your lent decision that much more painful. Hey, maybe I should go one step further and try to get in touch with WifeDoodle and introduce her to the concept of the meat punch.*

That would make me feel loads better. :)

Double Race Report: St David's Day 5K and 10K

Wales is incredible. Not only is there a castle everywhere you look, but the Welsh people are also super nice. Seriously, they put the stodgy English to shame.

A little of this...
Saturday was sightseeing day, so I drove the rental car while Theresa navigated. Getting out of Cardiff took forever and a day (come on, people, put some goddamn signs up on the roundabouts...preferably not in Welsh), but then we got to visit Caerleon, Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey.

Caerleon has the remains of a Roman legionary fortress. The bits you can currently see are part of the bath complex, the barracks and the amphitheater. The amphitheater was awesome! But then again that’s the assessment of an ancient architecture nerd, so take that as you will. The only thing that affected our enjoyment of the site was that right next door behind a line of trees was a cow farm. The tractor noises and wild bovine cries sounded like a cross between Caerleon’s own version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jurassic Park. Basically, it was kind of amusing in a very creepy, deeply disturbing way.

Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey were simply a-freaking-mazing. We got to run all around the ruins and explore every nook and cranny. I took more photos of Raglan than any of the Roman stuff in Caerleon. I just love me some crenellation.

All we got to see was a small corner of southwest Wales, but it was enough to make me want to go back as soon as possible. All I need to do is find myself some willing navigators because this weekend made it quite clear that I cannot drive and direct myself at the same time. I urge you all to spend what little you have in your savings and retirement funds to go to Wales immediately. It’s just too beautiful a place to pass up.

A little of that...
Sunday was race day. All the walking and stair-action on Saturday had me waking with sore legs on race day. Not the best beginning, but eh, it was worth it. To soothe all you worry-warts, I did promise Theresa that if my legs hurt at all during the 5K, I would DNS the 10K. Thankfully, there was no pain, so I got to run both. As per all your advice, I ran the 5K as a race and treated the 10K as a regular training run.

The races were held in Bute Park which is essentially the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

The park land was very tranquil and the day ended up being gorgeous with a temperature of about 50 F and sunny skies. The only two things to mar the perfection of race day were the lack of ladies toilets (Seriously, only three for a couple hundred women? You can so tell men organized this race) and no chip timing. We’re stuck with gun times which is a bit of a bummer but whatcha gonna do, huh.

All right, here’s how the races went down.

The entire time I felt like I was going so incredibly slow. It didn’t help that after the 1 km mark, I got prammed. That would translate to strollered for you North Americans. A guy about my age was pushing a baby no more than a few months old in a tricked-out pram. As he came level with me, he turned to me and smiled. I smiled back and then proceeded to laugh at the absurdity of my situation. Eh, it could have been worse. At least I wasn’t midgeted.

Halfway through the 5K, I was debating whether or not to even attempt the 10K mostly because my lungs were working like bellows on speed and I wasn’t liking it. At this point I even started to consider pulling out of my half marathon in two weeks. My mental state was pretty sad to say the least. I was just hoping for a 32 minute finish time by this point. After the 3 km mark, I started to feel a bit better and promised myself to pick up the pace at the 4 km mark. It was taking me so long to reach the 4 km sign that I was beginning to really worry about my pace. That’s when I turned a corner and noticed the finish line only about 300 meters away. I later found out there wasn’t a 4 km sign for some reason. Strange.

Anyhoo, when I saw the finish in the distance, I busted ass. According to the official clock, I crossed the finish at about 30:31, but my watch read 30:16. Either way, it’s a PR. Yay!

I totally took this easy. I made sure to stay in the back and take my time. Sadly, the 5K took a lot out of me, so this wasn’t a problem. The lazy pace allowed me to take in the scenery and enjoy the day. The race organizers had some great volunteers who made sure I never went off course which would have been so easy for me to do had they not been there. I could have done without all the other non-runners on the path (it wasn’t a closed course), but all in all, it was a great run. There was still enough left in my tank for a strong kick to the finish too which made me happy.

All in all it was not only a great day, but a fabulous weekend. I don't think I want to run two races in the same day again (I was freaking exhausted the rest of the day), but I’ll definitely look into more destination runs in the UK in future. It’s well worth it.

As for the train ride home....well, no one seemed to be bothered or aroused by my stanky sweaty self, but we did end up seeing a young guy wearing only a pink tutu, torn fishnet stockings and a smile walking through the carriages. They have some interesting people over here, let me tell you.
